Town's first big flood 103 years ago took heavy toll

From its earliest years, Odessa was threatened by floods.

The original town was platted in a flood plain in 1899. Nobody worried much about flood plains then, and as the town spread out from its first few blocks along First Avenue, homes were built along Crab Creek, which regularly over-flowed its banks at spring run-off time.

The first really disastrous flood, however, occurred in 1909. It was followed by many more, which sometimes inundated the business district. The biggest floods were those of 1913, 1916, 1924 and 1932.
