In this last column on how to become a superstar student, Michael Geisen emphasizes balance. You need balance for yourself as well. Having a fulfilling community life and personal life will make you a healthier, happier and more interesting person.

A balanced mind and a balanced life are important. Your future employers and the colleges or technical institutes you apply to won’t just be looking at your grades and SAT or ACT or AP test scores. They are going to consider your life skills and experiences. They want to know if you are creative, adaptable, motivated, passionate and able to work with a team.

One of the biggest challenges you’re probably facing right now is how to balance school, work and play. Balance in school starts with choosing the right attitude about the classes you take. With a “can do” approach and motivation to apply yourself, you are on the road to a successful life in school and beyond.

For subjects that are difficult or that you do not like, remember that all classes, even ones you dislike, will help you build skills and responsibility. Commit yourself to learn as much as you possibly can in those subjects as well. Ask for help when you need it.

Balancing your time outside school starts with the ideas about goal planning discussed earlier in this series of articles. Those involved in extracurriculars – be they sports, clubs, community service, or work – know how to manage time and plan ahead. Being focused on your goals will also help you keep focused on what you do daily to prepare yourself for your future.

For those who work after school or during the summer, they know that working is an important part of growing up because it helps them build skills, responsibility, and a bank account! They learn how to balance their goals with their immediate needs – a valuable lesson for anyone wishing success in life.

Volunteering and service work also will help you develop some skills while you also give back to the community. Making contacts with people outside of school can help you expand your future in countless ways. When they know firsthand your commitment to work and community, they can make great references as you apply for work or college.

With school and work, it is also important to remember that play is not an option. It is a necessity. Clubs or even down time will provide you with mental and physical health. You need play to help you keep balance in your life.

Strive for quality in all you do. Push yourself, but also know when to give yourself some slack. Remember, school is not the same thing as education. School only lasts a few years. Education happens all the time: before, during, and after school and for the rest of your life.
