Gearing up for the new school year

The Board of Directors of Odessa School District #105 met in the library at 6 p.m. on Thursday, June 27, 2019, preceded by a workshop in the district office at 5:30 p.m. for the purpose of reviewing the budget and staffing for the next school year. Board members Ed Deife, Heather Valverde, Chris Crossley, Janie Steward and Carmen Weishaar were present, along with Superintendent Dan Read, Principal Jamie Nelson and Business Manager Juli Weishaar. Also present were Facilities Director Justin Parr, Athletic Director Bruce Todd and Odessa Record reporter Terrie Schmidt-Crosby.

Under the consent agenda, the board approved the minutes of the May 22, 2019 regular meeting, bills and payroll warrants #612112-612137 and direct deposit warrants #900006980-900007035 for a total of $299,716.73; General Fund A/P warrants #612138-612185 for $51,003.53; ASB Fund A/P warrants #612186-612203 for $8,707.17; a General Fund comp tax wire transfer for $181.55; an ASB Fund comp tax wire transfer for $237.30 and the resignations of Kimberly Ryan as the senior class advisor and Lanae Carper as the high school assistant track coach.

Superintendent’s report

Read reported that the district ended the school year with an enrollment of 247 full-time equalivalent students, two above the budgeted figure of 245. For the purpose of budgeting for the 2019-2020 school year, the district forecasts a student enrollment of 230.

The superintendent presented the district’s 2017-2018 Assessment Audit Report from the State Auditor’s Office for the board to review. The audit summary results stated that nothing came to the auditor’s attention in the areas that were reviewed that caused their office to believe the District was not in substantial compliance with applicable state laws, regulations and its own policies or had significant weaknesses in controls over the safeguarding of public resources.

Principal’s report

Nelson said the senior assembly and graduation were successful end-of-year activities. She also said the unofficial state assessment results received by the district will be used for instructional and professional development planning for the 2019-2020 school year.

Board reports

The board thanked all those who had helped with graduation. There was some concern about the sound system and whether everyone in the gym was able to hear the commencement speakers.

AD report

Athletic Director Bruce Todd presented a list of 2019-2020 coaches for approval by the board and also advised the board that he will be serving as the NE 1B league president next year.

Todd said high school football practice will begin August 21, high school volleyball practice will begin August 26 and junior high football and volleyball practices will start the first day of school on August 28.

Facilities report

Facilities Director Justin Parr reported that work is progressing on various summer projects.

Financial report

Superintendent Read presented the ASB balance sheet for May, as well as the financial activity reports for the general fund for May showing an unassigned fund balance of $902,843.

Next regular meeting

The next regular budget hearing/board meeting will be held Wednesday, July 24, 2019 at 6 p.m. in the high school library, with a workshop scheduled at 5:30 p.m. jsut before the regular meeting.

Classified employment

assurances 2019-2020

The board approved a motion to approve assurance of employment for 2019-2020 to classified staff as presented by Superintendent Read.

Summer school staffing

Tim and Jill Larson were approved as summer school teachers, from July 8 – August 13, 2019, per the recommendation of Superintendent Read.

Principal contract 2019-2020

Superintendent Read presented Principal Nelson’s 2019-2020 contract, effective July 1, 2019, which included a two percent cost-of-living increase and revised contract of 215 days.

Staffing contracts

The board approved contracts for the following people for the 2019-2020 school year:

Amber Walker, first-grade teacher (continuing).

Heather Melcher, Kindergarten Teacher

Raymond Pope, Sr., bus driver.

Jeremy Nolden, custodian/maintenance II

Kyle Haase, groundskeeper/general custodian

2019-2020 Coaching Contracts

Athletic Director Bruce Todd submitted the following list of coaches who were approved for the 2019-2020 school year:

Executive session

Chairman Deife announced the board would go into a five-minute executive session at 6:30 p.m. to discuss ongoing qualifications for employment with no action to follow.

The board came out of executive session at 6:35 p.m. and Chairman Deife adjourned the meeting.
