Enrollment falls below budgeted number

School board members are recognized for their service to the school district and community at the January 22 meeting held in the high school library. January is celebrated as national school board recognition month.

The Board of Directors of Odessa School District #105 met in the high school library Wednesday, January 22, 2020 at 6 p.m., preceded by a workshop in the district office at 5:30 p.m. at which school superintendent Dan Read gave a presentation on the upcoming levy.

Board chair Ed Deife; board members Heather Valverde, Chris Crossley, Janie Steward and Carmen Weishaar; superintendent Read; principal Jamie Nelson and business manager Juli Weishaar were all present.

In this very brief meeting, the board approved the consent agenda which included the minutes of the December 22, 2019 regular board meeting; bills and payroll warrants #612685-612702 and direct-deposit warrants #900007393-900007455 for a total of $300,586.83; general fund A/P warrants #612703-612742 for $44,934.69; ASB fund A/P warrants #612743-612752 for $4,518.32 as well as the resignation of German Valdez as junior-high asst. track coach.

Superintendent's report

Read reported January enrollment at 226.3 full-time equivalent students, four below the budgeted figure of 230.

Read continues to work on the Consolidated Program Review which has a March deadline. The program review monitors federally funded programs under the Elementary and Secondary Education Act, fulfilling compliance monitoring requirements of the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction under federal regulations

Principal's report

Nelson reported that guidance counselor Kimberly Ryan is working on the spring testing schedule. Four students gave their STEM research presentations to the high school student body, she said, and the annual all-school academic assembly has been scheduled for February 7.

Facilities report

Facilities supervisor Justin Parr will bring roof replacement quotes and bus quotes to the next regular board meeting for the board's consideration.

Financial report

Read presented the ASB balance sheet and financial activity reports for the general fund for December showing an unassigned fund balance of $918,538.

Next regular meeting

The next regular board meeting will be held Wednesday, February 26, 2020 at 6 p.m. in the high school library, with a workshop scheduled at 5:30 p.m. in the superintendent's office before the regular meeting.

Board recognition

Read presented certificates of appreciation to board members in honor of School Board Recognition Month, thanking them for their service to the district and to the community.

Coach recognition banners

The board accepted the Booster Club's donation of banners to be hung in the gymnasium, one each recognizing recently inducted Hall of Fame coaches Ken Scherr and Jeff Nelson.
