Schmierer graduates WSU, begins fellowship

PULLMAN – Alexis B. Schmierer, an alumna of Odessa High School, graduated from Washington State University in December 2020 with a bachelor's degree in Human Development with certifications in Early Childhood Education and Family Studies. She is the daughter of Deric and Marra Schmierer and the granddaughter of Jan Foster, all of Odessa.

As an undergraduate, she served as a research assistant at the IMPACT (Improving Prevention through ACTion) Research lab while completing her degree. According to its website, "the Impact Research Lab includes undergraduate and graduate students interested in the prevention of social, emotional and behavioral health problems for youth, families and communities. The research aims to close the gap between the science and the real-world practice of prevention and promote collaboration with prevention practitioners and policymakers. Beginning in Jan. 2020, she assisted faculty and graduate students at the lab on a variety of projects and tasks including qualitative coding, focus group transcript cleaning, comparative analysis of current opioid related work in Washington state and assisting with IRB completion and submission."

Also in December, Schmierer was awarded the Division of Behavioral Health and Recovery Prevention Fellowship. In January of 2021, she will begin phase 1 of the fellowship at the Washington State Health Care Authority, initially working remotely due to the pandemic.
