Serving Lincoln County for more than a century!

COVID, convening and capital

Notes from Davenport's Feb. 22 school board meeting

DAVENPORT – The school board discussed whether to reconvene for in-person meetings now that Lincoln County is in Phase 2 of Gov. Jay Inslee’s re-opening at their regular Zoom meeting Feb. 22. They agreed to meet in-person beginning in March with a Zoom option for those who wish to tune in but aren’t able to physically.

It was the lone action item at the meeting.

The board did approve the consent agenda, which included accepting the Jan. 25 meeting minutes, approving the hire of high school assistant volleyball hire Trea Nonnemacher, approving the declaration of surplusing and dumping copiers no longer in use, accepting the resignations of high school science teacher Rawleigh Fisk and elementary secretary Rita Lebsock (both effective at the end of the school year) and approving the February bills and payroll.

Superintendent Jim Kowalkowski shared that COVID-19 numbers continue to decline within the district. He said the rapid testing option for staff members is still going, while noting that some students and family members can now utilize the service if there’s a virus outbreak within the family.

He also discussed students’ return to athletics with the move to Phase 2. Davenport had their first volleyball game and a football jamboree in the last week, and soccer and cross country begins this week.

High school principal Chad Prewitt said he hopes there can be an in-person graduation this year, but expects the district to have to get creative with some gathering restrictions likely to still be in place. The board was asked to consider ideas for the event.

Business manager Leslie Oliver reported that basic enrollment increased by four and special education enrollment increased by three in the last month.

“We remain under budget by 8.41 FTE for basic education and over budget by 3.67 for special education,” her report stated.

The school board will next convene in person with a Zoom option Monday, March 29.
