KETTLE FALLS – While the Gorillas will finish the season with a losing record (2-3), Davenport ended its shortened campaign on a high note with a 44-22 victory over the Kettle Falls Bulldogs (0-5) in a Friday matinee contest March 26.

Senior Mathew Orvis scored two touchdowns for the Gorillas; one passing, and one receiving late in the third quarter. Junior Jarrett Jacobsen helped put the Bulldogs away for good with an interception for a touchdown as Davenport improved to 2-2 in league play and 2-3 overall.

The Gorillas won the turnover battle and didn't lose a fumble once until late in the fourth quarter when the game was out of hand and mostly junior varsity players were in, bucking a trend that had often plagued offensive drives.

"We were able to move the ball around way better after the first half," Davenport head coach Justin Young said. "Our ability to move the ball consistently was good."

Davenport closed the season with wins in two of its last three games after falling to Asotin and Reardan in the first two contests. The Gorillas beat Northwest Christian (Colbert) and Kettle Falls, while falling to Columbia (Burbank) in a non-league contest.

"I saw a lot of growth, especially among the guys asked to come play varsity from J.V.," Young said. "The growth from kids this season was tremendous. There's a lot of potential heading into next fall."

Davenport was supposed to conclude the season with a league seeding game, but that was cancelled after several COVID-19 cases popped up within the high school and the school district elected to call off all contests this week.
