OHS scientists, engineers recognized

Bremerton, WA – Once again the Odessa High School students in the Advanced Science Research program presented their independent science and engineering research on March 26 - 27, 2021 at the 64th annual but virtual Washington State Science and Engineering Fair from their own high school science laboratory. Among more than 120 students attending, these local scientists earned the following places in their respective categories, along with other top Washington state awards:

Chloe Winkler – “TiO2/UV Based Photocatalytic Pretreatment of Postharvest Canola Stalks for Cellulosic Ethanol Production”

- 1st place Senior Division Award in the Category of Energy Sciences: Trophy, Ribbon

- United States Metric Award for Significant Amount of Quantitative Measurement, Certificate

- Wolfram Exceptional Research Award: Analysis Software, Certificate


Emily Scrupps – “Customized 3D Printing of Live Cells for Novel Bio-Circuitry”

- 2nd place Senior Division Award in the Category of Biomedical Engineering

- Sigma Xi Scientific Research Award, Monetary Award, Certificate

Yvette Davey – “The Comparison of Tea Tree Oil Liquid or Benzoyl Peroxide Gel on the Treatment of Acne Bacteria Growth”

- 2nd place Senior Division Award in the Category of Biomedicine & Health

Laela Hardung – “The Effect of Zinc on Bacterial Bioaccumulation”

- 2nd place Senior Division Award in the Category of Biomedicine & Health

Ashlyn Neilsen – “The Effectiveness of Kinesiology Tape on Stabilization of Muscle Groups”


- 2nd place Senior Division Award in the Category of Biomedicine & Health

As Emily Scrupps was selected as the finalist at the Eastern Washington Regional Science & Engineering Fair, she now prepares to attend the Regeneron Virtual International Science & Engineering Fair May 16-21, 2021. This fair hosts more than 2,000 high school students from over 80 countries, regions or territories and is the largest pre-college science competition in the world.
