Davenport Elementary School second-graders hold up their papers displaying what they think makes a great mother.

DAVENPORT – What makes a great mother? The question is broad and provokes thoughts, feelings and preferably good memories of the person who is, to many, the closest friend or woman in someone's life. With Mother's Day approaching this weekend and many sons, daughters, husbands and wives beginning to panic while they try not to forget the one day that's all about Mom, these thoughts and feelings are especially brought to the forefront of one's mind.

It may prove complicated to answer, but children have a way of simplifying things. So, The Times reached out to Davenport Elementary School students to ask them what they think makes a good mother, through the simple prompt "My mom is great because..."

Two second-grade classes were generous enough to take the time to answer this prompt and give their answers to The Times, as students gave their own perspectives on why they love their mothers ahead of this weekend's festivities.

The students' responses are listed below and have only been edited for A.P. style, as most seven-year-olds have yet to be taught journalistic writing.
