Panke wins district championship

Davenport boys take first amongst 2B squads at Deer Park

DEER PARK – Davenport's Kristof Panke hasn't been touched in league play yet this season, but he faced his toughest challenge on the biggest stage to date at the district qualifying match May 3 from Wilbur senior Bectett Odengaard.

Panke and Odengaard both shot tremendous 18-hole rounds and were two-under 70 through 18 holes. One playoff hole wasn't enough to break the tie, but on the second playoff hole, Panke sunk a 25-putt for eagle to take the win.

Odengaard missed a six-foot putt on the 18th that would've given him the win.

Panke played a bogey-free round for the first time this season.

The Davenport boys finished third in the NE2B/1B team rankings at Deer Park and were the top finishers amongst the 2B teams, qualifying the Gorilla boys for the final match at Kalispel Golf Country Club in Spokane May 13. Odessa and Wilbur finished with better team scores, but 1B schools compete May 6.

St. George's was the other 2B team to qualify for Kalispel.

Robert Bitcon had his best round of the season, finishing fifth individually with an 80. Maddox Schumacher shot a 96 and finished 15th, while Keaton Hupp was 26th with a 107. Jason Schillinger shot a 137.

On the girls side, Jada Rodrigues had a 59 through nine holes, but faltered on the back nine and missed qualifying for Kalispel by two strokes.

Meanwhile, three Harrington students individually qualified for Kalispel: Cody Larmer and Eric Mooney for the boys and Taleaha Quesada for the girls.

The Kalispel match in essence acts as this year's "state" championship with so many modified rules as a result of COVID-19. That match is May 13 and is an 18-hole round.
