Reardan volleyball topped by UCA

Girls varsity falls in four sets at home game

REARDAN – The 2021 fall season didn't get off to an optimal start for the Reardan volleyball team. The varsity girls fell to the Upper Columbia Academy Lions at home in four sets in Reardan's home opener Tuesday, Sept. 7 25-17, 13-25, 25-17, 25-19.

Reardan got the upper hand in the first set, jumping out to a 6-3 lead. UCA then scored eight straight points and pulled away to win the first set 25-17, as the Lions adjusted to tough serves quicker than Reardan was able to.

The home team then gained momentum behind several UCA errors and kills from senior Ella Curry, routing UCA 25-13 in the second set.

The third set went back and forth, with a tie 9-9, until UCA built a 13-10 lead in a set it would eventually win 25-17.

The fourth set was the most competitive of the match, with UCA holding a 16-15 lead at one point, but the Lions pulled away to win the set 25-19 and with it, the match.

The match was the first regular season contest for Reardan under first-year head coach Amber Whitman.

"We played hard, but they were a little bit more polished than we were tonight," assistant coach Mike Whitman said after the game. "They were a little bit more aggressive, so we'll have to get them next time."

Junior Lauren Moody led UCA with 10 kills, while junior Stephanie Polehna added 11 assists and sophomore Madison Threadgill notched nine digs for the victorious Lions.

Curry and fellow senior Kendall Little led Reardan with nine kills apiece. Junior Coalie Whitman had 10 digs and 10 assists, while junior Emma Flaa had a game-high 13 assists for the home team.

Reardan will look to get a regular season win in a nonleague trip to fellow Lincoln County school Odessa, a 1B school that lost to Oakesdale Sept. 7. The match is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 9.
