Tigers take fourth place

YAKIMA – The Odessa Tigers volleyball team was awarded the fourth-place trophy last Friday at the Yakima Sun Dome. The Tigers sailed through day one of the tournament (Thursday) with a bye in the first round, a 3-1 win over Republic in the second round and a 3-0 win over Neah Bay in the third round. Day two is where things got a lot harder for the Odessa team. As luck would have it, Odessa faced Oakesdale, the eventual tournament champions, in round 4 of play on Friday, falling to that unbeaten team 0-3. In the consolation round, the Tigers faced another powerhouse in St. John-Endicott/LaCrosse, losing 0-3 once again. It was a long, hard road, but the girls appeared happy to bring home more hardware for the trophy case.

Odessa vs. Republic

The Odessa Tigers were well on their way to a shutout against the Republic Tigers, but lost focus during the third set. They came back strong in the fourth set, though, and won the match.

Republic 15 21 25 8 1

Republic went into the consolation bracket, where it lost its next two matches and was eliminated from the tournament. Odessa moved on to face Neah Bay.

Odessa vs. Neah Bay

Later that same day against the Neah Bay Red Devils, the Tigers won the match in three straight sets.

Odessa 25 25 25 3

Neah Bay 16 23 19 0

The Red Devils were also eliminated in the consolation round.

Odessa vs. Oakesdale

On Friday, Nov. 12, the Tigers faced the Oakesdale Nighthawks, the 1B team ranked #1 in the state. The Tigers had faced Oakesdale in non-league play during the regular season and lost to them. To onlookers, the Tigers appeared to have the jitters. There were some great plays by Odessa but also too many unforced errors.

Odessa 16 17 9 0

Oakesdale 25 25 25 3

Oakesdale went on to face Mossyrock for the championship, while Odessa faced St. John-Endicott/LaCrosse for third and fourth place.

Odessa vs. St. John-Endicott/LaCrosse

The Tigers did better against this team but just seemed to have lost their spark.

St.JEL 25 25 25 3

The tournament ended with the following teams placing: 1. Oakesdale, 2. Mossyrock, 3. St. John-Endicott/LaCrosse, 4. Odessa, 5. Naselle, 6. Mary Walker (Springdale), 7. Pomeroy, 8. Shoreline Christian.
