Chamber discusses president, future events

DAVENPORT—The Chamber of Commerce’s new president, possible future events and attempts to generate more community involvement were amongst the topics of discussion at the Chamber’s monthly meeting in the Avista meeting room on a nippy Thursday morning April 14.

The Chamber is currently president-less as some locals seek to revive the group that has been largely inactive for the past two years before meetings in the last couple months.

Kathy Hedgcock reported that Dan Verhuel of Strate Funeral Home was interested in being co-president, but would like another businessperson in the city to share that responsibility with him.

As was the case with previous meetings, present members asked about increasing Chamber involvement with local businesses. John Stiles suggested asking someone from the Harrington Chamber to come and visit the Davenport Chamber to offer suggestions for how to continue a thriving Chamber environment.

In the wake of Sheriff Wade Magers announcing that he won’t be seeking a re-election bid this November, City clerk Dave Leath suggested that the Chamber could sponsor a candidate forum moderated by Record-Times editor Drew Lawson for county residents to learn more about those running for office in Lincoln County this year.

Lawson said he was interested in moderating the event and other Chamber members present were fascinated by the idea as some possible times of years were tossed around, but no hard decision was made.

Leath also said the city got an email addressed to the Chamber complaining about junk cars in the city. Hedgcock said those concerns should be directed to city council.

The Chamber’s next meeting is scheduled for Thursday, May 12 at 7 a.m.
