Two post-season wins for Tigers baseball

ODESSA–The Tiger baseball team defeated the Sunnyside Christian team last Wednesday, May 11, by a score of 16-6 and the Riverside Christian team this Tuesday, May 17, by a score of 9-4 to move on to the state tournament.

The next game for the Tigers will be on Saturday against #1 seed DeSales at Borleske Stadium in Walla Walla beginning at 10 a.m.

That game is a loser-out game. The winner will advance to play the winner of the Liberty Christian vs. Crosspoint game later the same day.

The other 1B teams, who are playing at Larson Playfield in Moses Lake are Wilbur-Creston-Keller vs. Naselle and Mount Vernon Christian vs. Almira-Coulee-Hartline.

Against Sunnyside Christian, the two teams were tied at 6-6 at the bottom of the fifth inning. The sixth saw new pitchers for SC, who had a hard time settling down. Several wild pitches and walks brought in runs to make the score 10-6, before another new pitcher came in.

Zach Claassen doubled to bring in two more runs. Singles by Hayden Miller and Dakota Steward brought the score to 16-6. The bottom of the sixth saw SC unable to come back. After one runner reached base on an error, the next batter hit a pop fly. The final batter hit into a double play, and the game ended, invoking the 10-run rule.

Starting pitcher Nathan Carstensen went all the way for the Tigers, allowing six runs on seven hits, walking one and striking out five. Third baseman Miller finished the day with five RBIs.

Tuesday's game against Riverside Christian was played in Odessa. The Tigers took the lead in the third inning with a five-run third inning after RC managed to score first on an error in the second.

Collin Martin doubled to bring in Holden Iverson who reached base after being hit by a pitch. Claassen then grounded out to bring Martin home.

After a single by Carstensen and a walk by Miller, Steward hit a single, scoring Miller (Carstensen was caught stealing home). Corbyn Neilsen hit a ground ball and reached second on an error, while Steward scored. Ben Reitz then hit a single to score Neilsen, and the score was 5-1. The Tigers added four more runs in the sixth.

Martin was the starting pitcher for the Tigers, going five and a third innings before being relieved by Carstensen. Martin allowed four runs on three hits, walked five and struck out nine. Carstensen allowed one hit and struck out one.
