As a young man, he attended Hutton Elementary School in Spokane, then after middle school he attended Lewis & Clark High School in Spokane where he graduated in 2004. Joe loved the outdoors. He was active in scouts from his grade school days to high school. He went on numerous scouting trips and campouts including ones at Camp Cowles and elsewhere including a 50-mile hiking and camping trip in the chain of lakes near Joseph Oregon. Later, Joe enjoyed fishing, especially fly fishing with his brother Jake and father John. There were many fishing trips to the North Fork of the Coeur d'Alene River and the St. Joe River. Joe and his family also rented the ranger cabin at Red Ives on the St. Joe River on several occasions. Joe also loved sports, especially soccer. In his adult life, Joe loved the arts and music. He was an avid collector of works of art, literature and music. He was always on the forefront of the latest works. He supported new artists in their literary works, paintings, music and had a large collection of all. His many friends included those he developed friendships with on the internet. He liked the nickname Oslo that he sometimes used. Friends also called him the philosopher. Joe hosted virtual gatherings and moderated events among his friends and the fans of his artist friends.

Joe was a kind and thoughtful person always ready to reach out to others. He enjoyed spending time reading in Manito Park where he would meet people that became friends. He welcomed all he met with a kind word and understanding.
