Davenport boys hope to reach bigger heights

Players hope for state berth after district upset

DAVENPORT-The boys basketball season last season had a lot of promise into February, but an upset loss to Lind-Ritzville/Sprague at districts squashed hopes of a state playoff run. Much of that team returns for this season, but head coach Matt Henry said the goal for this year is to take a more day-by-day approach.

"We need to be holding each other accountable every day," Henry said. "Eventually we'll look up and see how far we've come."

Senior stars Tennesee Rainwater and Brenick Soliday are expected to shoulder much of the offensive load once again, but Davenport should receive contributions elsewhere. Seniors Wyatt Telecky and Cash Colbert return to man the post and gobble up rebounds, while junior Jaeger Jacobsen has greatly improved his three-point stroke, Henry said.

Off the bench, Henry expects senior Jayvee Fudurich to be a key defensive cog. Guard Jesse Raugust and forward Jason Schillinger could carve out minutes made available by the graduations of Jake Coffman and Jarrett Jacobsen, the Davenport boss said.

Henry admitted that the players are keen on a state run and said the biggest area to improve toward that goal is in communication.

Monty Soliday and Brandon Rainwater will once again assist Henry's coaching efforts for a team expected to compete for an NE2B title. Teams standing in the way of that goal in a highly competitive league are expected to be Lind-Ritzville/Sprague, Northwest Christian and an always solid Colfax group.
