Davenport wrestling returns several state participants

Program attempting to start girls team

DAVENPORT-A first-year head coach that has been an assistant coach for over 20 years. Four wrestlers returning that competed at the Tacoma Dome last year. And for the first time, two females ready to make school history.

That's the current situation for the Davenport wrestling team, that began practice under new head coach Matt Schneider this week.

Schneider, a local rancher that was an accomplished wrestler in his own right in the 1990's, will head the team after being an assistant coach here for over two decades.

His assistants will be Noah Ziemann and Jesse Hoff.

Returning state participants include senior Sam Schneider, a 182-pounder who finished third in his class at state last year, 152-pound senior Matthew Wines, 160-pound junior Brody Schillinger and 195-pound freshman Brock Gustaveson.

"We'd like to get a bus load of kids to the Tacoma Dome," Matt Schneider said. "We've never done that before...But in terms of state championships, I'm not going to put pressure on those kids."

Other contributors this year could be two more seniors, Ryan Cash and Skyler Conway.

"If we send anything less than four (players to state), we failed," Schneider said.

For the first time, Davenport is attempting to start a girls program.

Two girls have turned out for the team so far: freshmen Stormy Conway and Kayla Andrews.

Schneider expects tough competition locally from Liberty and Reardan but thinks his team will stack up well against most teams they face.

The team is tentatively scheduled to begin its season with a home tournament Dec. 3, though that tournament wasn't officially in play as of press time.
