Davenport girls top Cougars, fall to Dragons

DAVENPORT - A short-handed Gorilla girls team took a loss to defending state playoff participant St. George's 46-38 Friday, Dec. 16, but rebounded to rout Chewelah 66-40 Saturday, Dec. 17.

Playing without its starting frontcourt of Lena Waters and Clare Lathrop against St. George's due to injury and illness, Davenport managed to build an early lead of 11-6 behind four points and three boards from Jensyn Jacobsen and four points from Emalie Jacoby.

St. George's flipped the script in the second quarter to take a 23-20 halftime lead behind nine points from Carsyn Gildehaus and eight points and five rebounds from Annika Bergquist.

Both teams struggled offensively in the third quarter, but the Dragons built their lead to 31-25 before holding off Davenport in the fourth quarter for an eight-point victory.

"We got ourselves in a bit of a tizzy and were showing more of our immaturity," Davenport head coach Stacia Soliday said. "We did not look good with passing. We just had too many turnovers. I thought we corrected it a little bit but (gave up) too many backdoor passes in the first half."

Gildehaus finished with a game-high 17 points, while Jacobsen led Davenport with 13 points.

Davenport got its starting center in Lathrop back for the Chewelah game and got a lot more scoring from its backcourt. Jacoby scored a game-high 21 points, while Glenna Soliday added 15 points.

Jacobsen's 13 points gave the Gorillas three players in double figures, while seven of the eight players that saw action for Davenport scored.

Davenport took on Napavine in Brewster after press time Wednesday, Dec. 21 before a nonconference matchup with Columbia (Burbank) Thursday, Dec. 22 that tips off at 6 p.m.
