Tate Nelson deals one of his 67 strikes in Reardan's 9-1 win over Kettle Falls, Friday, March 31.

REARDAN – On a frigid and blustery day, many spectators were forced to their cars to watch Screaming Eagles' pitcher Tate Nelson deliver a gem against Kettle Falls in a NE2B baseball matchup. In the first game of a doubleheader, Nelson overpowered Bulldogs' batters with a no-hit performance.

His pitching was the highlight of the Screaming Eagles' 9-1 win on Friday, March 31. Reardan also won the second game 6-4, to extend their winning streak to five games.

Nelson struck out the Bulldogs' first batter on three pitches and never looked back. He faced 22 batters, striking out 18.

In the fourth inning, Nelson walked in a batter to account for Kettle Falls' only run.

"Tate was very efficient," Reardan head coach Matt Clouse said. "He got into a groove early and was flat out dealing all game."

"He got ahead in the count and worked methodically and quickly."

Freshman shortstop Hunter Flaa preserved Nelson's no-hit game with a diving stop and put out at second base to end the game and give Reardan the 9-1 win.

Besides his stellar pitching effort, Nelson had two hits and two runs.

Evan Moser and Colby Clouse each got two hits for Reardan. Andrew Schulz, Tyler Clouse, Craig Rinehart and Colton Lonning each got one hit.

In the second game, Kettle Falls jumped out to a 3-0 lead.

In the bottom of the third inning, Nelson hit a double to score Flaa and Tyler Clouse, which brought Reardan to within one run.

In the fourth inning, the Bulldogs tacked on another run to give them a 4-2 lead.

Kettle Falls maintained its lead going into the bottom of the sixth inning.

Garrett Ellis got things going for Reardan in its half of the sixth inning with a line drive that put him on first base. Lonning sent Ellis home with a double to bring the Screaming Eagles back to within one run.

With Lonning on second base, the Bulldogs walked Flaa. Schulz sent Lonning home with a hard single to even the game at four apiece.

Tyler Clouse scored Flaa on a sacrifice fly to give Reardan the lead. Nelson then smashed his second double of the game, sending Schulz across the plate with an insurance run.

"In the sixth inning there was a lot of situational hitting that gave us the lead," Matt Clouse said.

In the seventh inning, Flaa struck out the side to secure the Screaming Eagles' 6-4 victory.

"The boys never panicked," Matt Clouse said.

With the two wins, Reardan improved its record to 5-3. Kettle Falls fell to 0-3.
