Odessa falls in district playoffs

SPANGLE — The Odessa baseball team came up one game short of advancing to the state playoffs, falling to eventual No. 6 state seed Sunnyside Christian 14-4 in a loser-out District 7/9 1B playoff game at Liberty High School Saturday, May 13.

Odessa came into the matchup underdogs against a strong Knights lineup, but the Tigers struck first with a run in the top of the second inning after both teams stranded a runner at third base in the first inning.

Senior pitcher Collin Martin came out strong, tossing three straight scoreless innings to start the ballgame.

But the Knights’ bats woke up in the bottom of the fourth, plating four runs to build a 5-1 lead Odessa couldn’t surmount.

The Tigers managed two runs in the fifth inning, but Sunnyside Christian added three more to extend the lead to 8-3.

The Knights would add six runs in the bottom of the sixth inning after Martin was forced to leave due to pitch count and build a 10-run lead to end the ballgame.

Sunnyside Christian was named the No. 6 seed in the state playoffs and faces No. 11 Riverside Christian in an opening round game at Mount Vernon High School Saturday.

Odessa, meanwhile, finished its season 9-9.
