Primary election coming Tuesday

DAVENPORT — The 2023 primary election is nigh. Ballots are due by 8 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 1.

On this year’s ballot are three-person contested races for council races in Odessa, Harrington and Sprague and another three-person race for Odessa Mayor.

Incumbent Bill Crossley and challengers Ed Hayden and Jeremy Smith are running for Odessa Mayor, while incumbent Marlene Kramer is being challenged by Mike Igo and Laura Caler for town council seat No. 5.

In Harrington, Gavin Wagner, Kelly Foreman and Steven Wright are running for city council seat No. 5.

And in Sprague, Jeffrey Smith, Trace De Garmo and RonDel Krauter are competing for city council’s No. 5 seat.

Commissioner Jo Gilchrist’s unchallenged race for re-election will also appear on the primary ballot, as she’s in a partisan position.

Other nonpartisan contestants in races with less than three challengers automatically advanced to the November general election.

Tuesday’s primary election will effectively eliminate one candidate from each aforementioned race in Odessa, Harrington and Sprague, as the top two vote-getters advance to the general election.

In addition to the primary election, a special filing period for unfiled races was held Tuesday, July 18 to Thursday, July 20.

On July 18, Lane Collier and Brian Benham filed for Reardan-Edwall School District Director No. 4, and Jim Baye filed for Cemetery District No. 1 (Edwall area) Commissioner.

Andy Schreck, Ericka Johnson, Lindsey McCluskey and Alton Leisle filed for Parks/Recreation District No. 3 (Davenport) Commissioner positions.

On July 19, Patrick Katz filed for another Davenport city council term, while Mike Wilkinson filed for a seat presently held by Chris Ruiz.

There were yet no filers for two open Reardan town council seats. No locals filed for Davenport or Reardan-area races July 20.
