Bulldogs hold off Gorillas in final two sets
DAVENPORT - The potential of the Gorilla volleyball team showed itself in spurts Tuesday night, but the experience and size of Colfax pushed the Bulldogs passed Davenport in four sets to snap the Gorillas' three-match winning streak and extend Colfax's winning streak to seven matches.
The first set gave indications that the match could be over quickly. Colfax was dominant out of the gate, riding a powerful kill attack to a quick 7-1 lead that extended to 20-8 as the set went on before the Bulldogs got a 25-13 win.
But Davenport rebounded, hanging around before erasing a 14-11 Colfax lead in the second set to take a 19-17 lead. Colfax tied the match with three straight points to tie the set 22-22, but after a timeout, the Gorillas scored three straight points for a 25-22 victory to tie the match 1-1.
Davenport held a two-point lead twice early in the third set, but three service errors allowed Colfax back into the set before the Bulldogs clamped down to build a 19-12 lead that turned into a 25-17 set victory.
The Gorillas weren't done building leads, going up 16-13 in what would be the game's final set, but an 18-14 set lead evaporated with four straight points from Colfax.
The Bulldogs then took a 22-20 set lead it wouldn't relinquish, eventually winning the set 25-22 to finish off the match.
"They continued to find ways to score on us, even when they were out of system," Davenport head coach Natalee Hayes said. "They did a good job of managing those swings."
Naomi Rainwater had 12 kills for Davenport, while Faith Bell notched 18 assists. Ava Swan had 16 kills, 23 digs and three aces for the Bulldogs.
The win came after Davenport earned a 3-2 win at Asotin Thursday, Oct. 5.
"(We need to) get out of serve-receive quicker, within one or two points rather than three, four, five," Hayes said. "Defensively, we can continue to work hard keeping the ball off the net so our hitters can go swing away."
The Gorillas fell to 5-4 with the loss to Colfax and will look to rebound in a road match at St. George's at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 12.
