Wrestlers visit Royal, Pomeroy

Gustaveson takes first in class

ROYAL CITY - Wrestlers from Davenport and Reardan spent part of their winter break at the Royal Christmas Tournament Friday, Dec. 29. And the Harrington wrestlers that are part of the Lind-Ritzville athletic co-op were further south, competing in the Pomeroy Christmas Tournament Saturday, Dec. 30.

Davenport's Brock Gustaveson was the lone local champion. Wrestling at 190 pounds, Gustaveson pinned Jayton Caddy of Tonasket in 3:43, Valentin Juarez of Warden in 4:51, Tazrik Perez of Othello in 3:43 and Alexis Paredes of Wapato in 5:55. He then beat Parker Hodgen of College Place 8-2 to win the class.

Wrestling at 120 pounds, Davenport's Wayland Holmberg finished in third place. He pinned teammate Damon Dolhay in 2:28 before falling to Zander Boyd of Ephrata 16-14.

Holmberg then pinned Reardan's Alex Matusik in 0:25, beat Erik Camacho of Warden 9-2, pinned Jon Brooks of Columbia (Burbank) in 4:44 and pinned Marshall Pell of Cashmere in 3:00.

At 165 pounds, Davenport's Brody Schillinger pinned JJ Herrenrara of Cashmere in 4:58 and Hunter Keen of Ephrata in 1:52 but was pinned by East Valley (Yakima)'s Colin Attaway in 1:25 in the semifinals.

At 215 pounds, Reardan's Carson Durbin pinned Moses Lake's Aidan Uber in 1:27 and Quincy's DJ Frerks by forfeit but was pinned by Jorge Mendoza of Wapato in 0:46 in the semifinals.

Alex Bonner was the lone Harrington wrestler to notch a win in Pomeroy, beating Union's Nathan Crago by major forfeit at 132 pounds.

In other weekend wrestling:

• Harrington's Turner Slack was pinned by Clarkston's Jaimin Elliot in 1:21 and fell to Clarkston's Brenton Wolf due to injury, while John Branham fell to Austin Ritter and Gabe McKaig, both of Union.

• At 126 pounds, Reardan's Landon Smith and Davenport's Noah Everett dropped their first matches.

• Davenport's Brendon Peters-Biggs fell in his first match at 132 pounds.

• Reardan's Coen Caldwell, at 144 pounds, fell to Keanu Barcenas of Mabton before beating Quincy's Angel Farias 3-1 and Ephrata's Jett Johnson 15-5. Caldwell was then pinned by Connell's Daniel Ramos in 0:51.

• Reardan's H.K. Bird was pinned in his first 150-pound match.

• Davenport's Solomon Holmberg, at 175 pounds, pinned Liberty Bell's Alex Ramsey George in 3:27 but was pinned by Castle Rock's Mason Darvell in 0:52.

• Reardan's Sterling McLaughlin was pinned in his first 190-pound match.
