Six Gorillas advance to regionals

Competition for state is Saturday

SPOKANE - The Davenport wrestlers had a solid showing at the Northeast B Sub-Regional Tournament at the Spokane Convention Center. Six Gorillas finished in the top four of their weight classes to advance to regionals this weekend, while one wrestler will be an alternate as a fifth-place finisher following sub-regional competition Saturday, Feb. 3.

At 190 pounds, sophomore Brock Gustaveson won his class and advanced to regionals. Gustaveson pinned Lind-Ritzville/Sprague's Travis Redburn in 2:46 and Colfax's Isaac Nelson in 3:01, then beat Pomeroy's Curtis Winona by major forfeit.

At 157 pounds, sophomore Solomon Holmberg advanced to regionals with a second-place finish. Holmberg defaulted to the championship round after Pomeroy's Levi Bowen was injured, then was pinned by NWC's Joel Phillips in 1:06.

At 165 pounds, senior Brody Schillinger advanced to regionals by defeating NWC's Jaxson Hamilton 17-2, then falling to Liberty's Clae Holling 9-5.

At 120 pounds, eighth-grader Wayland Holmberg advanced to regionals with a third-place finish. Holmberg was pinned by Colfax's Cody Phillips in 4:52, but pinned Asotin's Parker Port in 3:13 and Lind-Ritzville/Sprague's Waylon Rosman in 3:38 before exacting revenge on Phillips with a 50-second pin.

At 126 pounds, eighth-grader Daman Dolhay advanced to regionals with a third-place finish. Dolhay was pinned by NWC's Noah Stegman in 1:24, then got a bye in the third-place match.

At 132 pounds, senior Brendon Peters-Biggs advanced to regionals with a third-place finish. Peters-Biggs was pinned by Colfax's Dillon Gassenberg in 4:46, then got a bye in the third-place match.

At 150 pounds, sophomore Gabriel Carey finished in fifth place and is an alternate to regionals. Carey was pinned by Asotin's Noah Saltz in 5:23 and Liberty's Thorne Tissue in 2:46, then pinned Colfax's Austin Campbell in 0:20 to finish fifth.

In other Gorilla wrestling, eighth-grader Landyn Murphy was pinned by LRS's Wyatt Gibler in 2:54 and NWC's David Phillips in 0:35 in the 113-pound class.

At 120 pounds, senior Noah Everett was pinned by Rosman in 2:50 and LRS's Cooper Rushing in 4:05.

And at 190 pounds, sophomore Carl Medhaug was pinned by LRS's John Branham in 2:55 and Traye Redburn in 1:55.

In girls wrestling, 120-pound sophomore Emma Cash pinned Royal's Sarah Eaton in 1:16, then fell to Kettle Falls' Anna Hume 16-1. Cash then defeated Wahluke's Adriann Lovejoy Mitchel 6-3, then was pinned by Wilbur-Creston's Heather Wyborney in 0:55.

At 120 pounds, eighth-grader Alexis Ward was pinned by Deer Park's Evelyn Scott in 2:39 and Wilbur-Creston's Skyla Jensen in 0:46.

Wrestlers who qualified for regionals will compete at Liberty High School in Spangle Saturday, Feb. 10. Competition begins at 10 a.m.

The top three wrestlers in each class advance to the state Mat Classic, while fourth-place finishers are alternates to state.
