Davenport girls fall in Round of 12

Gorillas' season ends after one Arena game

SPOKANE - After dispersing of No. 15 Tri-Cities Prep to advance to the bright lights of State B Basketball at the Spokane Arena last Friday, Feb. 23, the No. 10 Davenport girls basketball team ran into a buzzsaw from No. 2 Warden that ended the Gorillas' season in the Round of 12 Wednesday, Feb. 28.

Davenport topped the Jaguars in the first round 50-40 at Cheney High School and fell to the Cougars 64-49 in the Round of 12 Wednesday.

The first half against Tri-Cities Prep was an ugly affair. Made shots were at a premium, with both teams preferring bricks and airballs to swishes.

Davenport led 7-5 after a quarter, but trailed 17-15 at halftime. The Gorillas found offense in the second half, however, building a 31-25 lead into the fourth quarter behind 12 points and 19 rebounds from Clare Lathrop.

Tatum Hupp came off the bench to provide a spark with six second-half points, which were part of Davenport widening the gap to 39-27 with 5:13 left. The Gorillas held on for a double-digit win to advance to the Arena.

Lathrop finished with 14 points and 22 rebounds. Addie Schneider added 11 points and seven rebounds, while Jensyn Jacobsen had eight points and seven rebounds.

"We had worked on a triangle and two in practice, and we did not do that in the first half," Davenport head coach Stacia Soliday said. "I don't think our defense was our problem anyway, but I was hoping it would get us going a little faster. Some steals picked up the pace of the game in the second half."

Wednesday morning, Warden showed why it is the second-ranked team in the state. The Cougars poured in a trio of treys in the first quarter, but Davenport found offense in the paint to hang around for a 17-11 deficit after one.

Then, the Cougars pounced. Warden scored 13 straight points to start the second quarter. Davenport followed with a short 6-0 run, but still trailed 30-17 at halftime.

Warden didn't let up in the second half, notching 34 points in the final 16 minutes to pull away for an easy victory.

Glenna Soliday scored a team-high 14 points in Davenport's defeat. Jacobsen added 12 points and six rebounds in her final game.

"We had a good district playoff," Stacia Soliday said. "It was a good improvement for most of our younger people and I'm glad we were here as kind of an introduction (to) how physical and how strong and how fast you have to be every possession, and we just weren't, yet. Hopefully we will gain a little more strength and speed."
