SPOKANE — Heading out to ring in the New Year on Tuesday night, Dec. 31?
The Washington State Patrol has some words of wisdom for you — don’t drink and drive.
The patrol is assigning additional troopers for New Year’s Eve as part of a driving while under the influence emphasis statewide.
According to the patrol, statistics show there’s a 71% increase in drunken driving crashes resulting from New Year’s celebrations, compared to other times of the year.
“Drive sober and watch out for other drivers,” the patrol said in a press release last week.
Troopers will be on the look out for drivers who are under the influence of both alcohol and marijuana.
The patrol is asking any motorists to report intoxicated and high drivers to help keep others safe during New Year’s.
The increase in patrols coincides with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over.”
This year’s campaign reminds drivers, “Don’t Pass on a Sober Ride.”
“I urge everyone to do their part to help save lives this holiday season. Plan a safe and sober ride home,” agency Deputy Administrator Sophie Shulman said. “If you drive impaired by alcohol or drugs, you’re putting yourself and others around you at risk, and the consequences can be devastating.
“Let’s make this holiday season a memorable one for all the right reasons.”
