Three juveniles plead guilty to mischief

HARRINGTON - Three juveniles have pleaded guilty to a vandalism spree that caused $8,400 in damages to vehicles and public restrooms.

Donovin Jackson, 16, of Harrington, Carter D. Frutchey, 15, of Harrington, and Landon R. Gatewood, 14, of Davenport, each pleaded guilty Tuesday, July 7, to amended charges of third-degree malicious mischief in Lincoln County Superior Court.

Court records show the teenagers broke windows on four vehicles at Harrington Truck and Auto, including three antique trucks and a school bus, causing approximately $7,040 in damage on April 17. They also damaged two bathrooms at the town park, causing an additional $1,437 in damage.

Jackson was originally charged with first-degree malicious mischief while Frutchey and Gatewood faced second-degree malicious mischief charges.

On July 7, the charges were amended and all three juveniles changed their pleas to guilty on third-degree malicious mischief counts, records show.

Gatewood was sentenced to 30 hours of community service, his share of $479.14 in restitution, and nine months of community supervision, records show. Frutchey received 20 hours of community service, his share of the same restitution amount, and nine months of supervision.

Jackson was sentenced to 20 hours of community service, pay his share of $3,735.89 in restitution at $500 per month, and serve nine months of supervision, according to court documents.

Each juvenile also received a suspended 10-day detention sentence that can be imposed if they violate supervision terms, according to court records.

"You're going to be known in this community as the kid who did this," Judge Adam Walser told the juveniles during the hearing. "That reputation is going to stick with you unless you work very hard to change it.

"This is your opportunity to turn things around. I expect you to take it seriously."

A hearing on community service and restitution for all three is set for 9 a.m. Aug. 18.
