DAVENPORT - A local teenager is spending his summer watching over swimmers at the pool while saving for college and building friendships.
Joel Odenrider, 17, of Davenport, started working as a lifeguard this summer to earn money for school. He plans to attend Walla Walla Community College.
The training mixed in-water swimming tests with classroom sessions that included videos and instruction on safety procedures.
"How much people actually love the water" has surprised him most, Odenrider said. "I'm surprised that every day so many people come here to swim."
