  • School Board: All-day kindergarten, school-wide Title I discussed

    At last Wednesday’s meeting of the Odessa School Board, school superintendent Suellen White reported that a public meeting held the previous Tuesday on the subject of providing all-day kindergarten was well attended by members of the community.   • Plinkski: "Jettison the generic"

    Mayor Doug Plinski utilized the new audio/visual equipment in the public library to make a point about publicizing a community. First he showed a YouTube video produced for the city of Leavenworth, Wash. Then he showed a clip from “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart” about Butte, Mont., featuring their toxic water pit. The video presentation was a result of Plinski attending a conference at Big Bend Community College March 18 and 19.   • Scherr receives science teacher of the year award

    Beverly Scherr, retired Odessa second-grade teacher, was named the WSTA Elementary Science Teacher of the Year at the WSTA-EEAW (Washington State Science Teachers Association and the Environmental Education Association of Washington) conference held in Poulsbo, Wash. during the weekend of March 18-20.   • Beauty of desert spring not to be denied

    I love spring. If pressed, I would tell you my favorite season is fall, but I love spring. When I was a little girl, I could be found wandering the creek just behind our farmhouse, or the swales up the driveway, looking for wildflowers, polliwogs, birds’ nests. I can’t begin to describe how wonderful it was to find a clutch of killdeer eggs disguised as gravel, lying at my feet. Of course, it was better to find them at my feet rather than under them. Drivers could buy magnets to attach to fuel lines to allegedly boost a car’s gas mileage by 20 or even 30 percent.     Washington voters have made it more difficult for state lawmakers to hike taxes by requiring a two-thirds majority to do so. The Legislature’s response? Increase fees, instead. Gov. Gregoire has ordered state agencies to cut their budgets and streamline their operations, saying, “State government cannot conduct business as usual.” But instead, some agencies want to offset their agency’s budget cuts with higher fees.     To the Editor: The Columbia Basin Development League submitted comments during the public input stage of a draft Environmental Impact Statement for the Odessa Subarea Special Study. The Special Study is evaluating alternatives which would deliver Columbia Basin Project water to the Odessa Groundwater Management Area to replace deep wells. The wells in the area are in severe decline. A “no action” alternative is also being considered.   • Lions Club health screening unit visit deemed a success

    Tuesday, March 22, saw a visit to Odessa from the Lions Health Screening Unit, funded by the Northwest Lions Foundation. This was only the second time the brand-new unit had been used, said Scott Heimbigner, Odessa Lions club president. The 62-foot trailer, pulled by a new Kenworth tractor, spent the morning at the Odessa schools, where they provided free screenings for vision, hearing, blood pressure and diabetes to all available school children from kindergarten through 8th grade.   • LIons, Riders Clubs serve up great grub, raise project $$

    Nearly 250 people were served at the March 12 Odessa Lions Club Crab Feed. Lions members pre-sold 171 tickets for crab and 76 for prime rib, according to club president Scott Heimbigner. Each crab dinner consisted of 1 1/2 fresh crabs, cleaned and heaped on a plate, served with melted butter, garlic bread, potato salad and beans.     Families with students in Odessa’s kindergarten through eighth-grade classes are invited to attend Future Engineers Family Night in the Odessa school cafeteria Friday, May 15, at 6 p.m. The event is sponsored by the Odessa Title 1 program, with help from the High School Honor Society and the Parent-Teacher Organization (PTO).     Odessa’s Knowledge Bowl team took sixth place at the state 1B competition held Saturday, March 26, at Central Valley High School in Spokane.     Monday, March 14, was “Pi Day.” Harrington School District math classes from the elementary to high-school levels celebrated with activities, pie and other circular foods.   • T-Ball signups to be April 7 at Christ Lutheran Church

    Parents with children interested in playing T-ball or coach-pitch ball this spring may register their child(ren) at Christ Lutheran Church Thursday, April 7, between 5 and 7 p.m. This will be the only official sign-up session prior to the start of play.
