I sat down to interview Jim and June Walter in their home one evening after they had been at the home of friends enjoying oysters. June is a soft-spoken, polite and elegant woman who loves genealogy. Jim can have a gruff, intimidating exterior, but you know where you stand with him. He is honest, devoted to his wife and family, and has a great sense of humor. June was born in Kansas and moved to Omak, Wash. after her parents had divorced, reconciled, and remarried within the y...

  • Welcome to My Kitchen

    LAURA ESTES|Updated Aug 28, 2013

So many recipes, so little space. Over the next few weeks, I will get all the submitted recipes published. This weeks column will focus on the most summery recipes, and of course, zucchini. Kathy Ratkowski brought UnPotato Salad to a recent community potluck picnic. Cauliflower is used in place of potatoes to create a low-carb salad. Kathy made note on the recipe that she uses a little less mayonnaise than the recipe calls for, and substituted the light version. UnPotato...

    DUANE PITTS|Updated Aug 28, 2013

In 1943, Professor Abraham Maslow of Brooklyn College proposed that human behavior is guided by five basic needs (in this order): 1) physiological, 2) safety, 3) belongingness, 4) esteem, and 5) self-actualization. People, children included, are motivated to fulfill the basic needs (1-3) first before moving on to the last two needs. In other words, food and shelter (1), safety and protection (2), love and affection (3) come before learning or achieving on test or in school (4 and 5). Individuals will not move on to higher...

  • Market Perspective

    PEARSON BURKE|Updated Aug 28, 2013

Over the last month the price of wheat has been in a fairly narrow trading range. That relative calm has belied some of the powerful forces that have been influencing the grain markets both globally and locally. The futures markets are the backbone of the grain markets, for better or worse. And over the last month the speculative funds have had a major influence on the market by acquiring a record short position in wheat and a very sizeable short position in corn, largely based on the anticipation of a record corn harvest. Up...

Krupp was renamed Marlin 95 years ago Ninety-Five years ago this week, sentiment against Germany during the height of World War I caused the citizens of Krupp, Odessa’s neighboring town 18 miles to the west, to change the name of their community to Marlin. The following report is from The Odessa Record of 1918: For some time past, the patriotic citzens of Krupp have rankled in the thought that the name of their abiding place was christened after the home of the largest German gunworks, and there has been growing sentiment f...

  • Locals in the Limelight; Marcus Horak

    KATHY TAYLOR|Updated Aug 22, 2013

For someone who will be 27 this month (August 28), Marcus Horak is truly an “old” soul. He is a kind, quiet, introspective guy…shy in some respects. Although imposing at 6’4” tall with a size 17 boot, he is a gentle, compassionate and caring guy. There to lend a helping hand to anyone who needs it, he admittedly has an issue saying “no” to anyone. This might account for why Marcus is currently on the school board, an EMT, a Freemason, a lifetime FFA alumni member, Chamb...

    PEARSON BURKE|Updated Aug 14, 2013

The grain markets have been in a downtrend for the last couple of months, pressured by very favorable weather in the central U.S. and continued selling by speculative funds. Traders were surprised that in the July crop report USDA increased acres and production despite the flooding and planting delays that the cornbelt experienced for most of the spring. Heading into Monday’s report, most traders were looking for a 14 billion bu corn crop and a 2 billion bu carryover for next year. Once again the market got caught leaning the...

The town of Odessa has an ordinance governing the numbers of pet cats and dogs any given household may have (without requiring a kennel license) and stating that pet owners are responsible for cleaning up after their animals. Animals running loose, getting into other people’s yards or defecating on downtown streets or lawns are subject to capture by local police, and fines may be levied against the owners. But what if the animal is not a personal pet? What if it is a wild animal that has found life in Odessa to be a v...

  • Advice from a small town girl

    LISE OTT|Updated Aug 14, 2013

I just got back from a short stay in my home town. I’m pretty sure I should have stayed longer, but I ran away. I usually do. My dad fell last week, and the results weren’t particularly pretty. When I arrived at his house Saturday afternoon, he was asleep on his bed. That was enough to alarm me. My dad has always been a pretty good napper (wherever he happens to be – on the porch or at the table) but if he’s in bed in the middle of the day, you know it’s serious. After he...

  • 2013 harvest a mixed bag

    Updated Aug 14, 2013

Harvest is just about over for the Odessa area, and it looks as though yields were down in some places and above average in others. Some farmers reported far more frost damage than they had anticipated. Especially when going through low-lying parts of their fields and then up onto hills, the change was sometimes quite dramatic. Dryland wheat ranged from the low 30s to the mid-50s (bushels per acre). One Lamona-area field of dryland wheat farmed by Tom Evavold produced 69 bushels per acre. Some other fields of wheat planted...
