National Night Out fun, informative

National Night Out or “America’s Night Out Against Crime,” as it is also known, was established in 1984 by the National Association of Town Watch (NATW), a non-profit organization dedicated to the development and promotion of various crime-prevention programs. The aim is to promote involvement in crime-prevention activities, form police-community partnerships, develop neighborhood camaraderie and send a message to criminals that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back. National Night Out is held the first Tuesday of August.

Since1984, when the first National Night Out took place, engaging 2.5 million Americans in 400 communities in 23 states, it has now grown to involve more than 37 million people and 15,000 communities from all 50 states, U.S. Territories, Canadian cities, and military bases all over the world.

The tradition began with a “lights on” campaign on front porches across the country. It has now morphed into a celebration, with various events and activities, including block parties, cookouts, parades, visits from emergency personnel, rallies and marches, exhibits, youth events, safety demonstrations and seminars with the intent of raising awareness and promoting community relations.

In Odessa on August 6 of this year, the Odessa Police, the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office and the Odessa EMTs and firefighters were all involved in making “Night Out” an event for all ages to enjoy. Police chief Helen Coubra and Lincoln County Undersheriff Kelly Watkins drew names and handed out prizes. Odessa deputy Bryce Peterson handed out free bicycle helmets to all who wanted them. He said he thought about 100 were distributed.
