By KATHY TAYLOR Larry and Linda Gustafson's lives are rich with history and many funny stories. Married 48 years, their love of fun and adventure is a special bond they share which has been embedded deep within their children as well. I arrived out at their farm house in the country which they have lived in since 1976. I fell in love with this huge dog in the yard. It was about five degrees outside and I was rubbing his face and ears. I thought he was growling at me and then realized he was being very verbal about how...

Delbert and Delores Cook have been married for 64 years. I sat down in their immaculate home as we reminisced about their life together. Delbert has been a tireless worker all his life and did not retire from masonry work until he was in his mid-80s. Delores is a ball of energy, a sprite on her feet, a great "conversationalist" as her husband stated. In fact, he deferred to her during much of the interview because of her great recall of facts. He told me, "she knows my past...

By KATHY TAYLOR I sat down for my interview with Chris and Tianii Costlow at their auto repair shop. Chris spends a lot more time here than at home and has built his reputable business through years of hard work and service to our town. Although well known in the community, they are both very busy in their jobs, and they choose to spend rare time off with their family, a close network of friends or just as a couple doing the things they love. Chris is a hard-working, polite man with a calming presence. Tianii, who describes he...

Odessa Cub Scout Pack #784 went Scouting for Food last Saturday, driving around Odessa picking up the bags of food that residents of the town placed on their porches. The Odessa Food Bank receives the groceries and adds them to their shelves for the coming months ahead. The winter months are always the most difficult for those who are on fixed incomes. Heating bills add up, gas is ever increasing and few can prepare for the unknown ups and downs that happen in life. The Cub Scouts and their parents have delivered 740 pounds...

Sam Mullins was born in 1961, the son of Ruby Music and Toby Mullins. He grew up in Packwood and Randall in southwest Washington. His father was a logging truck driver. We laughed about a caption I once saw on a photo in the newspaper of a logging truck that had spilled logs on the highway. "How much wood can a wood truck chuck?" it read. Even though his father was 15 years older than his mother, they died within two weeks of one another about 25 years ago. He was not surprise...

We are at a fork in the road. Which way do you want to go? To the left the road appears level, straight and without winding curves, but you can only see ahead about a quarter of a mile due to heavy fog. On the right you see a road with a tough incline, rocks in the middle of the pathway and a creek to cross, but you see a bright little town sitting in a valley about a mile ahead. Did I forget to tell you that you have your grandkids with you? Ok, you see where I am going with this. Do we manage the town for sustainability...

Last week's Halloween activities appeared to provide fun for young and old in the communities of Odessa and Harrington. Both towns had Halloween carnivals that allowed kids to be in out of the cold, participate in games and win prizes. The Halloween carnival in Harrington took place on Monday, October 28, sponsored by the Harrington PTA, and had great success with a good turnout, according to Marge Womach of Harrington. The Odessa carnival was sponsored by the FFA chapter of...
