  • Locals in the Limelight

    KATHY TAYLOR|Updated Jul 23, 2014

I sat down to interview Jim and June Walter in their home one evening after they had been at the home of friends enjoying oysters. June is a soft-spoken, polite and elegant woman who loves genealogy. Jim can have a gruff, intimidating exterior, but you know where you stand with him. He is honest, devoted to his wife and family, and has a great sense of humor. June was born in Kansas and moved to Omak, Wash. after her parents had divorced, reconciled, and remarried within the y...

I first met Bonnie Burroughs one day at the local hair salon. We had never been officially introduced. We became fast friends, largely because of our mutual love of reading. We discussed different books and recommended some of our favorite authors. A few weeks later, she came into my office with a bag full of books. I couldn’t believe that someone I had met only once would do something so thoughtful. Telling her I would get them back to her as soon as possible, she told me to...

  • Locals in the Limelight; Marcus Horak

    KATHY TAYLOR|Updated Aug 22, 2013

For someone who will be 27 this month (August 28), Marcus Horak is truly an “old” soul. He is a kind, quiet, introspective guy…shy in some respects. Although imposing at 6’4” tall with a size 17 boot, he is a gentle, compassionate and caring guy. There to lend a helping hand to anyone who needs it, he admittedly has an issue saying “no” to anyone. This might account for why Marcus is currently on the school board, an EMT, a Freemason, a lifetime FFA alumni member, Chamb...

  • Locals in the limelight

    KATHY TAYLOR|Updated Aug 14, 2013

When I arrived at the home of Keith and Becky Kolterman, I was amazed at the beautiful, sprawling green lawn and manicured flowerbeds. “Your yard is amazing. It looks like a park,” I told them. “Funny you should say that,” Becky told me. Apparently, one day when she and Keith were inside the house, a car pulled up in their side yard. They watched as two adults, two kids and a very large dog got out of the car. The dog gleefully frolicked around their yard. They watched...

  • 2013 harvest a mixed bag

    Updated Aug 14, 2013

Harvest is just about over for the Odessa area, and it looks as though yields were down in some places and above average in others. Some farmers reported far more frost damage than they had anticipated. Especially when going through low-lying parts of their fields and then up onto hills, the change was sometimes quite dramatic. Dryland wheat ranged from the low 30s to the mid-50s (bushels per acre). One Lamona-area field of dryland wheat farmed by Tom Evavold produced 69 bushels per acre. Some other fields of wheat planted...

  • Fest won't happen this year without lots more volunteers

    Updated Aug 9, 2013

Fest is fast approaching, and volunteers are desperately needed. This call seems to go out every year about this time. The office staff at the firm of Leffel, Otis & Warwick has organized the bed races at Deutschesfest for the past several years. This year will be their last, and some other business or organization needs to take it over. More importantly, the new volunteers need to get on board now, so that they can learn the ropes from the gals who have done such a great job...

  • Locals in the limelight - Dee Deife

    KATHY TAYLOR|Updated Aug 8, 2013

When I approached Dee Deife to ask her for an interview, without missing a beat she told me she needed to check her calendar to make certain she didn’t have any other interviews on Thursday. She has a razor sharp wit and a calming presence that draws people in. In some respects, she is a private woman, a keeper of secrets. I learned so much that I had never known about her -- her joys, her triumphs and some of her darkest hours. Dee was born in Tonasket, June 11, 1942. She w...

  • Summer fun almost over

    TERRIE SCHMIDT CROSBY|Updated Aug 8, 2013

It is that time of year again when the lazy days of summer (who has those anyway; we certainly don't) give way to the hectic late summer time of county fairs, back-to-school activities, preparation for Odessa's number-one money-making community festival Deutsches Fest, not to mention all of the other local festivals in towns all around us. This week is our back-to-school issue. We haven't even had time to cover the local harvest yet. That will come next week, as will the sched...

    Updated Aug 8, 2013

Phillip Klein and Servi Dei Farms of Columbia County have been fined $10,000 by the Washington Department of Ecology (Ecology) for burning wheat stubble without an approved agricultural burning permit. Klein, owner and operator of Servi Dei Farms, burned a field of about 300 acres of wheat stubble before the required agricultural field burn permit had been issued in 2012. Klein applied for the permit, citing agricultural burning as the only reasonable means to reduce crop residue in his fields before fall planting. Inspectors...

No one he has asked around town, even the oldtimers, he says, knows what it could be.
