Summer reading ends Emma Aldrich organized the youngsters into the reading circle and began a story about Super-Hero Firemen. Bridget Rohner brought ample supplies for the 17 young super heroes to create costumes during their craft period. Masks for their eyes were colored and worn for most of the session. Rolls of foil were dispensed freely and the children used it to make protective helmets, capes for swift flight, claws for the ends of their fingers and weapons. One young l...

The Armstrong surname is familiar in the Harrington area. There were probably three W.B. Armstrongs in their family charts, but there was only one "Sleepy," whose given name was Edgar Alan Armstrong. Sleepy was a son of George Albert 'Doc' Armstrong (1857-1945) and his wife Mary Eliza Goodwin (1860-1941). George's father was a large farm owner in Texas where he also owned a store and hotel. At the end of the Civil War, G.A. was just seven years of age. In later years he could...

It took longer than any of us would’ve liked it to, but after 176 days and three special sessions, we were finally able to adjourn last week. Although we needed three special sessions, I am proud of many of the things we accomplished as a Legislature for the people of Washington state. My first session in Olympia truly exceeded my expectations. I made it my mission to build solid relationships with people on both sides of the aisle throughout the session, because I know how mu...
Summer Reading In spite of summer vacations, Bridget Rohner has managed to keep the statistics high with the attendance this fourth week at 15 children. The group began with the reading of a story, for which the children were very attentive. The major theme this week was the five senses and the children thoroughly enjoyed the hands-on approach. Each was given a piece of paper to record their answers regarding the bottled aromas that they were sniffing. Victoria Rice helped the children with the hearing test, where the...

The foot bridge across Crab Creek has become more than rickety these days. Many boards are cracked and loose. Others exhibit screws that have backed out of the wood by an inch in some cases. It seems that the looser everything gets, the more the bridge also becomes a target for kids and even some adults who do their best to make the bridge sway as much as possible while other people are trying to cross it. The swaying is likely one reason why the screws are becoming so loose. Some boards have even lost all of the screws at...
Several new alcohol- and marijuana-related laws became effective today. Among the new laws is a section of Senate Bill 5052, the Cannabis Patient Protection Act, which changes the name of the former Liquor Control Board. Effective immediately, the new name is the Liquor and Cannabis Board which reflects the regulatory responsibilities the agency has had since 2012. The name change is the first for the agency since it was established by the Steele Act on January 23, 1934.* “Having just passed the first anniversary of m...
The Odessa Town Council met Monday evening in the public library. Council member Lois Harp had submitted a letter of resignation from the council due to illness. It was accepted with regret by the other council members. Since it is too late for the position to appear on the ballot for the general election, the council will have to appoint someone to fill the position. Mayor Doug Plinski said that citizens are encouraged to send letters of interest (in the position) to the town clerk’s office. Cass Gebbers and Will Wolfe a...
The wheat harvest in the Odessa area is about 90 percent complete, and as most people suspected when harvest began, the outcome has been rather dismal. Overall dryland yields were down by about 40 to 50 percent overall, according to Mark Cronrath at the Odessa Trading Company, even lower than the initial reports at the beginning of harvest. For the second year running, yields have been below average. On top of that, the dollar has been strong lately, which tends to depress wheat prices. At the Odessa Union Warehouse, Pearson...
The board approved the hiring of Kate Wenzl (Harrington’s new special education teacher) for head junior-high girls basketball coach and assistant junior-high volleyball coach and Danielle Vesneske (Odessa’s new special education teacher) as the junior-high assistant basketball coach. For the third week of the summer reading program, the children listened to a short story of the super-power of a dog’s nose which gives them the ability to find people lost in snow, or find drugs or explosives in the airport, or find lost children during a fire. Dogs have other super-powers that, with training, enable them to be seeing-eye dogs. Budding entomologists Cindy and Victoria Rice brought live specimens of insects in jars, while program director Bridget Rohner was well-prepared with placards depicting insects for t...
Odessa has had more than its share of tragedy in recent months. Traffic accidents of various kinds have affected several local families. The two most recent incidents were not fatalities, but they will certainly have enormous repercussions. The Grant County Sheriff reported that the car Larry Zagelow was driving drifted too far to the right, then rolled, perhaps several times. Larry’s son Jeff Zagelow spoke to The Record Tuesday and said that his father is making a slow recovery, but a recovery nonetheless. He has been m...
Last Saturday, July 18, a small car show was held in the parking lot across from the former Rolling Thunder Saloon and current Green Goat Gathering Art Gallery building. The purpose of the car show was to promote the coming car wash to downtown Odessa at some point in the future. Organizer Nate Lathrop said he had a great time organizing his first car show. Odessa has not had a car show in several years. He called it a “small but nice showing.” The People’s Choice winner was local resident Jim Zimprich with his 1936 GMC T...
The July 8 meeting of the Odessa and Harrington school boards was a special meeting held in Harrington to complete business regarding the two schools’ athletic cooperative that had been tabled at the previous meeting in June. The June meeting had drawn a relatively large crowd of parents from both towns who had expressed discontent with the Odessa board’s filling of a coaching position without the Harrington board’s expressed approval and various other issues of communication between the two school administrations and board...
A fire which tore through a Moses Lake business Friday has been ruled accidental. Grant County Deputy Fire Marshal Nathan Poplawski says employees at Inland Tarp and Cover, 4172 North Frontage Road East, accidentally ignited a fire while using a metal chop saw. Sparks from the cutting ignited nearby combustibles. Employees tried to put out the fire using extinguishers, but the fire quickly grew out of hand. Firefighters from Grant County Fire District 5 were called around 9:40 a.m., and quickly called for help from the Moses...
Troy Eldridge and Ty Trexler have been friends for several years. Both are chiropractors by profession. Both are family men and enjoy life in eastern Washington. As these things sometimes happen in life, their career trajectories came together at the right time for both men. Trexler, with offices in Coulee City and Wilbur, wanted to expand his business further. With a solid administrative crew in place, he wanted to offer his services to a wider geographical area. Eldridge, on the other hand, although he loves being a...

No one in Odessa has filed to run for mayor in the November election. So what happens now? Councilwoman Lois Hubbard went to the Lincoln County Auditor’s office for the answer. Since no one filed for the office in either the initial filing period or the special additional filing period, the office will not even be on the November ballot. Therefore, there is also no possibility for a write-in candidate to be elected. Once current mayor Doug Plinski has concluded his final day as mayor on December 31, 2015, it will be up to t...
Several tax changes took effect July 1 following passage of Washington’s new state operating budget. The 2015 harvest has begun in earnest, two to three weeks ahead of schedule for most area farmers. Dry conditions have prevailed since last year, with spotty rain allowing some farmers good conditions for planting winter wheat, but almost no snow all winter and only scattered showers in March and May, plus late spring frosts, all of which adversely affected the crop. Since the beginning of June, there has been no rain at all and a three-week streak of hot weather with high temperatures in the triple digits. None of this has b...
