Second place and $50 went to Greg and Kellie Luiten, whose all-white light scheme was pleasing to the eye. T...

As Cargill defected, three other owners of Northwest grain terminals rejected a longshore union offer Monday, dismissing it as uncompetitive. Members of longshore union locals will vote Friday and Saturday on an earlier “last, best and f...
The hustle and bustle of holiday shopping has begun. While you are rushing from store to store, remember you aren't the only one looking for a hot deal. Parking lot thieves are on the prowl, preying on inattentive shoppers and hoping to cash in at your expense. If you have optional comprehensive coverage on your auto insurance policy, your vehicle is covered if it’s stolen. However, your auto policy will not cover gifts and most personal possessions stolen from your car. Your homeowners’ or renters’ policy does cover your...

Of the 15 toys recalled in the United States so far this year because of the dangers they pose to children, 10 were manufactured in China. Chinese drywall imported from 2001 to 2007 released sulfur gas that sickened homeowners and corroded wiring, air-conditioning systems and other metal surfaces. Many of those homeowners are still trying to win compensation. In recent years, U.S. dogs and cats died from eating Chinese pet food made with melamine, and the FDA warned consumers to throw away toothpastes made in China because...

Lovely idea, but all my red, white and blue material was home in Washington, and I was in Florida to house- and pet-sit for her while she was gone!” Walter asked members of the Yahoo group, Stashbusters and members of the quiltingboard.com if they would donate a 12-inch block so she could make the qui...
Operators of six grain export terminals – including United Grain Corp.’s facility at the Port of Vancouver – struck an aggressive tone last week in giving union dockworkers until December 8 to accept their “last and final offer.” In a statement emailed to The Columbian by Pat McCormick, spokesman for the Pacific Northwest Grain Handlers Association, the group said it’s offering the International Longshore and Warehouse Union increases in “an already generous wage and benefit package” in exchange for changes in work rules s...
At its regular meeting November 28, school superintendent Suellen White told the Odessa School Board she was recommending a rollback of the 2013 levy passed last February (and to be collected beginning in April of 2013). The original levy amount was $698,000. She recommended rolling back $48,000 of that figure. This will mean collecting $24,000 less during the spring budget cycle and $24,000 less next fall in the next budget cycle. Any other suggestions are welcome. Call Chamber president Marlon Schafer at 988-0260. Noon meeting, 11/27 The Odessa...
