Odessa volunteers receive rescue, firefighting training

Four of Odessa’s newest volunteer firefighters participated in a training session at the Spokane County Fire District 9 Training Center in Mead April 22. Justin Parr, Frank Horak, Brenik Iverson and Paul Whitmore accompanied Odessa Fire Chief Don Strebeck to the session, driving one of the town’s new fire trucks.

The volunteer teams spent about two hours practicing firefighting on one side of the building, while other teams learned about search and rescue on the other side.

When asked how the training was, Horak replied, “Hot. With the fire in the building at all times, the temperature and humidity in the building were high.” During the search and rescue scenario, he said, “All you could do was stumble around in a smoke-filled building.”

All the participants were trained to use the foam fire suppressant that can be delivered by the new town fire equipment.

In a separate training session in Odessa April 28, all town volunteers, as well as several from rural Lincoln County Fire Protection District #3, were trained on the foam fire-extinguishing technique available with the new equipment. The Odessa volunteers were also all certified as able to drive the new vehicles.
