O-H sports roundup

Golf

The Record erred last week in stating that Kira Powell had fallen to her opponent by one stroke. The true story was that she trailed by one stroke after Round 1. In Round 2, she showed grit and determination and ended defending her title and winning first place by eight strokes.

The Odessa-Harrington golf team finished another golf season with great success at the state tournament in Tacoma, Wash. last Wednesday afternoon.

Alex Hatten finished with a round of 85 to add to his first day round of 83 for a total 168, good enough to place him in a tie for eighth place. Alex was playing a very steady round until he got to the very challenging par-four 14th hole. He went into tall grass on his drive then bounced his shot off a tree and out of bounds. He ended up taking a nine on the hole, the only blemish on an otherwise great round of golf. He finished out the round with four more pars.

Kira Powell, after faltering a bit on the first day with a non-typical score of 86, found the returning state 1B/2B champion playing catch-up the second day, behind first day leader Kim Brumfield of Rainer Christian. In more typical Kira fashion, she came back determined to defend her title on a rainy Wednesday morning and proceeded to pick away at the competition. She shot one of the best scores of the day for girls or boys with an 81, finishing with a birdie on the 18th green.

Kira shot 86-81 for a 167 total, beating the next closest competitor by eight strokes to retain her title as 2011 1B/2B girls state golf champion.

Tennis

At the state tennis tournament held in Yakima on May 27, Kate Bouchard and Kylee Kieffer of Harrington fell in Round 1 to Smith and Vincent (Cascade High of Leavenworth) 6-1,6-4. In Round 2, Bouchard and Kieffer defeated Walker and Smith of Goldendale 6-4,6-4.

In Round 3, a loser out, winner to the trophy round match, Mankowski and Kennedy of Tenino defeated Bouchard and Kieffer 6-7(8-6), 6-3, 6-2 to end their season.

“The girls had a great post-season run and played very well,” said their coach Jim Furman. “After partnering up after the regular season, they won nine matches as a doubles team.”

Track & Field

Koralynne Kuch, the only Odessa track and field athlete to qualify, took eighth place at the state 1B meet in Cheney last weekend in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 19.75a. She placed ninth in the triple jump, leaping 27 feet, 11.75 inches. Just a sophomore, Kuch will likely be a factor for her team for the next two years.
