Health and Fitness classes test mettle with hike

Thursday, June 9, the Odessa 5th, 6th and 7th-grade Health and Fitness classes embarked on the culminating project of their walking program.

The classes were driven on an Odessa school bus nine miles out of town to the Lake Creek Canyon Trail near Pacific Lake, and then hiked back into town. The students were accompanied by Sam Read, Larry Weber and Marianne Iksic.

Emergency back-up was provided by Landon Lobe, a member of the Odessa Volunteer Fire Department.

There were 40 students in all, and it took about 4 hours with a 20 minute lunch break and two 5-minute rest stops.

All students made the nine-mile hike with no real problems. The teachers were proud of their efforts and their present fitness level.
