Consignment auction a sucess

The Odessa Volunteer Fire Department held their annual consignment auction Saturday, February 22, in an empty lot on north Alder Street in Odessa.

Beginning at 9 a.m., a total of 175 registered bidders took part in the auction under the direction of auctioneer Tom Reinland of Reinland Auctioneers & Liquidators of Greenacres. The number of items offered was the largest to date and included 500 lots from the estate of Sam Todd. The bidding was brisk and competitive, with many items going for prices that pleased both the owners of the consigned goods and the fire department.

Town fire chief Don Strebeck said the department made in the neighborhood of $6,000, with several expenses not yet deducted from the proceeds. All of the items were sold by 1:30 p.m., Strebeck said.

The local Odessa chapter of FBLA took advantage of the event to raise funds by cooking up burgers and sausages for lunch for the assembled crowd. Their venture was also very successful, as they ran out of food shortly before the auction ended.

Strebeck said that after last year's auction made very little money, especially given all the work involved, the firemen were hesitant to continue with it. The success of this year's event was a hopeful sign that the auctions will continue in the future.
