100 years ago

March 13, 1914

The school district, by vote, refused to bond itself for the purchase of a civic center, 135 to 68.

The Odessa concert band has opened a dance hall in the Kreigler-Page block and will give a series of dances to furnish money for the organization

C.C. Dobson is driving a nifty new 1914 Ford runabout.

Gottlieb Schatz returned Wednesday with a new, 1914, 32-horsepower Detroiter. He and Fred Goetz having taken the agency for Odessa.

A.C. Schy has opened a two-chair barber shop in the front end of the building occupied by the Janikula brothers.

The school in district No. 113., 14 miles north, burned last week and school is being held at the William Link home.

Mrs. Mary C. Eddy, Spokane, has purchased the Hotel Odessa from C.W. Francis and will install steam heat. William Martin, who had leased the place, left Tuesday.

S.S. Barney left Tuesday with a load of horses for Swift Current, Sask., where he expects to remain for sometime.

March 9, 1939

Winter made a belated attempt to remain in the Odessa area this week, with several inches of fresh snow falling over the weekend.

An announcement was made on Wednesday that the Seattle grain company plans to erect a grain elevator at Odessa during the summer months.

Odessa high school's basketball team, champion of Lincoln county, fared badly at Cheney, in the 19th annual high school district tournament, losing its first start to Rockford and the second game to Ione.

"The Magic Beanstalk," an operetta, will be presented by the junior high school on Friday night, under the direction of Miss Loretta Kennedy of the music department.

Funeral services were held for Mrs. H.H. Scheller, 51, the Rev. J.H. Wacker officiating. The Rev. Fred Burkhardt, Ritzville, assisted.

March 12, 1964

Beef and cattle breeders of the area now have immediate access to an artificial insemination service through John E. Deife. Sires provided through the Odessa service are from all breeds and have been selected through the programs of Evergreen Northwest, and Armour's.

Dominating the 48th annual Inland Empire Shorthorn and Polled Shorthorn association sale at Spokane last week were two bulls from the herd of Lakeview Ranch at Odessa, operated by Don Evavold and Jake Walter, Jr. Lakeview showed the champion and reserve championship bulls.

A cold week, with threats of snow, has stopped the scattered spring work that was in progress last week. A heavy coating of snow still remains in the northern part of the county.

Republican national committeeman Robert Timm of Harrington, will be the honored guest at a reception, arranged by the Lincoln county Republican Women's club, Mrs. Donnell Looney, president.

Contestants for Junior Miss are Karri Watters, Laylene Plinski, Melinda Dammel and Brandi Deife.

Odessa physician's assistant Larry Sayrs is one of a thousand Spokane area members of the National Guard who was to leave today for South Korea for an international military exercise.

A spokesman for the Odessa lions Club said USDA surplus foods would be handed out on a first-come, first-served basis to qualified recipients.

Sam Reed reported that this year's track team has 25 members (more than one-third of the high school student body), so it should be a great year for track.

The Odessa Chamber of Commerce turned 100 years old.

Odessa Gun Club ended their trapshooting season with Marvin Greenwalt making a perfect score of 25. Hitting 24 were Colley Walter, Landon Lobe and Brady Gies.

Kamrin Darleen Arlt, daughter of Brad and Debbie Arlt, of Ritzville, and Brenik William Iverson, son of David and Sharon Iverson, of Republic were wed in Spokane.
