High school's chess club draws over 30 members this year

The Odessa Chess Club had a great year back at Odessa High School once again. Fierce battles occurred this entire school year in the Odessa High School science room, with “checkmates” ringing through the halls. This year’s OCC officers: Thor Wehr-President, Griffey Powell-Vice President, Chance Messer-ASB Rep/Treasurer, and OHS science teacher Jeff Wehr serving as the Odessa Chess Club advisor.

With 30 participants, the club regained its popularity since it was started in 2003. In order to qualify for the end of the year OCC Tournament, active members must have played all other competitors in the regular season totaling 870 official games. Of the 30 members, the students who finished the requirements to earn a lettermen’s pin in chess were Zoe Clark, John DeWulf, Max Greenwalt, Wyatt Haase, Colton Melgren, Chance Messer, Griffey Powell, Sam Schafer, Casey Schlomer, Caleb Singer, Colby Sooy, Patrick Valverde, Shelbey Watkins and Thorsen Wehr.

The results of the 2013-2014 OCC Tournament were Chance Messer in first place, Colby Sooy second place, Sam Schafer third place and Thorsen Wehr fourth place. Congratulations to all OCC members, and we hope to see you again next year!
