NNO teaches safety awareness

National Night Out is a community, police awareness-raising event in the United States, held the first Tuesday of August.

The event has been held annually since 1984 and is sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch in the United States and Canada. The NNO is meant to help make a partnership between police and communities to fight crime.

Odessa had their second National Night Out at the park. Sandi Smith welcomed everyone to the event and then introduced Lincoln County Sheriff Wade Magers, Lincoln County Undersheriff Kelly Watkins and Odessa Chief of Police Helen Coubra.

Organizers of the event were: Sheriff Wade Magers, Undersheriff Kelly Watkins, Sgt. Mike Stauffer and Reserve Deputy Kory Becker.

Members of the community brought dishes to add to the hamburgers and hot dogs donated by the fire and police departments and cooked by firemen Roger Sebesta, Landon Lobe, Stephen Walter, Pete Martin and Brenik Iverson. Pastor Jon Hayashi gave the prayer.

Ice cream was donated by the EMTs, Justin Parr, Todd and Vicky Iverson, Sandi Smith, Abby Reyes, Marcus Horak and Jennifer Goetz.

The firemen and EMTs gave tours of their vehicles, and door prizes donated by local businesses were given to attendees. Games were offered for the children, plus they had a chance to win a backpack full of school supplies donated by Schmidt Insurance.

Keeping the event focused on safety, a member of each group, the police, fire fighters and EMTs delivered ideas on ways to stay safe.
