The Odessa Record -

Memorial Day ceremonies at hospital, cemetery

Members of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #7395 and American Legion Post #105 decorated the graves of all veterans at the Odessa Cemetery with flags and crosses and dedicated two new flags donated by the families of veterans who had died within the past year. Flags were dedicated for Lloyd Tebow and James Goetz.

Prior to the ceremony at the cemetery, the volunteers performed a similar ceremony for the folks in the Odessa hospital assisted-living and long-term care wings.

At the cemetery, Legion member Bob Kissler was the emcee. The address was given by Pastor Jon Hayashi of Heritage Church. Ladies Auxiliary members Leora Nixon and Lynn Allen placed the wreath on the grave of the unknowns. Members of the audience joined Mike Hardung in placing a wreath on the vintage World War II tank that is displayed at the cemetery.

The crowd that attended the ceremony at the cemetery was small compared to some years, but those who attended were struck by the beautifully decorated graves of veterans and other loved ones. The many flags flying over the cemetery were testament to the sacrifices made by local veterans in defending their country.
