Cruizin' Harrington, Bridges Home, new pastor

Chamber meeting

Wednesday noon, June 1, at city hall, the Harrington Chamber of Commerce met with Cassandra Paffle-Dick, Cindy Haase, Tim Tipton, Jenna Fries, Paula Pike, Bunny Haugan and Heather Slack present. It was reported that the money from vendors will be placed in the Downtown Revitalization Fund. Review of the clean-up day for Cruizin' Harrington, utilizing the students with various projects, worked well, and hopefully instilled the principle of working for and with one's community. Vendors were reportedly happy with the turnout for the day. The Harrington Golf and Country Club did a good business, selling 55 prime rib dinners in the evening. The PTA raffle quilt brought in another $556 for their fund. No report was available from the car show. Discussions were held on the city directory sign, a potential Wi-Fi sign and possible for activities for the Harrington Fall Festival.

Bridges Home event

Saturday evening, June 4, the Bridges Home musical group performed at the Harrington Opera House at 7 p.m. About 50 persons turned out to hear their mix of Americana, Celtic and Bluegrass music, as well as many original pieces. For those not familiar with Bridges Home, the group consists of Tami and Dave Gunter, and recently joining them was Paul Gunter from Sandpoint, Idaho with a total collection of 17 instruments. Among the instruments were guitars, tenor ukulele, clawhammer banjo, accordion, octave mandolin, Celtic harp, resonator slide guitar, bass, Irish whistles, bodhran, stompbox and washboard, harmonicas and foot percussion.

Moving from one song and style to the next, it was a lively event, full of stories of the origin of a song or the origin of an instrument. Cando Girl, Legacy of Love, Glory Bound, Sweet High Lonesome Sound, Then Again, In Bed With the Blues, Buffalo Nickel and A Roosevelt Dime (played on Dave's Cigar Box Guitar), Shenandoah, Joni Mitchell Days, Love Is a Long Long Way, Song for Ireland, Star of the County Down and Heaven Bound were some of the more than 20 numbers played.

In spite of the warmth of the auditorium, it is believed that not a person left during intermission. There was an unfortunate disconnect by the electricians with the wiring of the elevator which will be remedied before the next event on June 25. The audience seemed well pleased with the music, the singing and diverse instrumentation. HOHS was also pleased with Dave Gunter's comments about the opera house being a living, breathing place.

Harrington Church

of the Nazarene

Pastor Cade and Bonnee Clark, son Nick and daughter Victoria arrived in Harrington May 28 to serve as the new pastor of the Harrington Church of the Nazarene. With their two cats, they came from Colorado Springs and took charge of the morning worship service on June 5. Pastor Cade Clark will be installed at a special service on July 17 with the district superintendent. A nice crowd turned out for his first service, including Pastor Doug Perkins, the interim pastor. Most that attended stayed for a lovely get-acquainted barbecue after the worship hour.
