Chamber members, others working hard to make Fest 2016 successful

The Odessa Chamber of Commerce met August 9 to discuss preparations for this year’s Fest. Themes for the next few years leading up to the 50th anniversary of the festival have been selected by the Chamber’s marketing committee. This year’s theme is “Adventures in Wunderland” to conform to the theme of the decorations selected for the Odessa float.

An online contest by the marketing committee was conducted on Facebook to select a name for the newly adopted Deutschesfest mascot, a rubber chicken. Given the popularity of the “Chicken Dance” at Deutschesfest, the choice of the chicken mascot seems appropriate.

The winner of the contest was Lore Hille of Washtucna who chose the name “Hilda” for the chicken who will make appearances at many different venues prior to and during Fest in order to let everyone know that the 46th annual celebration of Odessa’s Volga/Black Sea German heritage will take place September 16, 17 and 18, with lots of fun for all.

New this year will be outdoor activities and contests for kids held on the grass volleyball courts beside the playground at the town park. Jennifer Martin is spearheading this effort, contact her if you are willing to help out. The few tent campers who set up in that space in previous years will be asked to look for a camping spot within the larger part of Reiman Park.

The Old Town Hall Rejuvenation Society has invited antique and vintage-item vendors to rent space in the Old Town Hall at this year’s Fest. In the same vein, a swap meet will be held in the empty lot across the street from Rolling Thunder Pizza. A band will also perform at the lot, adding another point of interest further to the west along First Avenue.
