Harrington Historic

Preservation Commission

Tuesday evening, November 1, the Harrington Historic Preservation Commission met from 6:30 to 8 p.m. with members Celeste Miller, Aileen Sweet and Anita Harman present, along with visitors Marge Womach and Cherie MacClellan. Minutes were read and approved. The group was sad to learn that Lindsey Hutsell had resigned her position on the board. Three projects had been taken on by Hutsell which included the Time-Line, the Brochure and the Poster. She had previously turned over her work on the pillars project with Michelle Overmeyer at CPS to Miller.

Members were encouraged to attend the Community Forum November 17. Discussion was held regarding the type of brochure that the Commission would prefer and whether a grant could be obtained to cover the expense. Discussion was also held on the Chamber or Public Development Authority possibly creating a brochure for the town and whether the Commission would want to contribute to that rather than pursue a project of a purely historic brochure.

Grant writing is still “in process” for the work on the pillars. Miller presented a rough draft of the “request for proposals” for the removal, relocation and repair of the stone pillars. Contractors would be required to present their proposals by January 13, 2017. The December meeting was canceled, and the next meeting will be January 6, 2017.

Chamber of Commerce

President Cassandra Paffle-Dick called the November meeting of the Chamber of Commerce to order Wednesday noon, with the following individuals present: Paula Pike, Allen Barth, Timothy Tipton, Sharon Nighswonger, Jill Plaskon, Kathy Hansell, Jenna Fries, Heather Slack, Dave Michaelson, Cindy Haase, Margie Hall (EDC), Melanie Kennedy, Billie Herron, Bekah Downey, Cherie MacClellan, Summer Clark, Justin Bradford, Jennifer Versluis and Bunny Haugan.

December 3 will be Santa’s date for his yearly appearance at the Harrington Opera House lobby for pictures and treats for the children. The Chamber will furnish candy and small toys for the “goodie bags.” Gift baskets containing grocery items for senior citizens will also be distributed.

Business Appreciation Week was discussed at length with the emphasis on promoting local shopping. Summer Clark informed the group that US Bank promotes a “Business Partner of the Month.” Suggestions included promoting local business on social media, featuring a business and interviewing the owner for the local paper, updating the web page; having welcome packets that include info on local businesses, structuring a scavenger hunt to bring folks to the businesses.

The group was reminded of the Community Forum on November 17 at 7 p.m. at the Opera House Art Room. The PTA is in charge of the program. The purpose of the meeting is for the various organizations to share ideas and hear what others are doing.

Those present were asked what their business was and a little about it. With about 20 people present, each contributed a brief statement. Visitors to the Chamber were Cherie MacClellan, a new homeowner, and Jennifer Versluis, a woman interested in opening a bakery in Harrington.

With the year coming to a close, Pfaffle-Dick asked the current officers what their intent was regarding their elected position and whether they wished to continue in that position. Pfaffle-Dick will be stepping down; co-vice president Sharon Nighswonger said if someone was interested in her position she would step aside. The other co-VP, Kathy Hoob, did not wish to continue. Treasurer Cindy Haase was willing to continue in her position. Secretary Bunny Haugan was willing to let someone else take her position.

PTA

The Harrington PTA has undertaken the project for this year of acquiring new drapes for the school’s multipurpose room stage. One of the PTA members has offered to donate her talents to make the drapes if the PTA furnishes the materials, thus saving the group nearly $5,000. The initial cost projection was between $6,000 and $8,000. This conscientious group held the Halloween Carnival in an initial effort to raise the money. If community members would like to donate to this cause, a check may be sent to the Harrington PTA, Attn: Rachel Roberts, Treasurer; P.O. Box 204, Harrington WA 99134. If one wants to make it as a Memorial Donation, please provide that information as well.

Opera House Event

Scott Kirby will perform at the Opera House November 19, at 4 p.m. His ad reads: “Scott Kirby: 150 years of American music, original artwork, video and narrative, in a unique celebration of Americana. Local scenes such as the Rocklyn Church included!” He was in Harrington during the summer at which time he drove around the countryside looking for scenes that would work well for his presentation.
