Odessa FFA students visited the farm of Jeff Melcher (in stocking cap and white coat) to learn about cuts of beef, above, and the processing of hamburger, below.

Members of the Odessa High School FFA chapter took a field trip to the farm of Jeff and Heather Melcher this past Monday, where they learned how to butcher a beef. It was an opportunity to expose the members to another kind of agricultural career. All members helped bone-out, grind and wrap the beef. They also learned where the different cuts of meat are located on the animal. For some, this was a totally new adventure, while others were old hands at it. At the end of this butchering day, the students called it a successful learning experience and said they would love to do it again.
