The phrase, “I had the pleasure of speaking to...” really and truly applies to certain people in this world. Merleen Smith is the epitome of that phrase. After talking with her I always feel like I am leaving the conversation better off than I was before I started it. I can always count on the fact I will have laughed at least twice and smiled the entire time.

I had the pleasure of talking with Merleen last week about the dates that the Odessa Food Bank is open and about the various items needed to re-stock their shelves. Items currently needed are noodles (of any kind), tuna fish (or any canned meat), Hamburger Helper, potato mixes, pasta salad mixes, peanut butter (creamy or crunchy), soups, pork and beans, beef stew, spaghetti sauce, Spaghetti-Os, breakfast cereals, canned fruits, canned vegetables and mild chili. Also needed are toiletries such as toilet paper, toothpaste, tissues, deodorant, shampoo, bar soap, razors, combs, brushes, dish soap, laundry soap and tooth brushes. Of course, these are not the only items accepted by the Odessa Food Bank. Any nonperishable food items and toiletries are gratefully accepted.

Those wishing to make a contribution to the Odessa Food Bank have a few options available to them. Both Christ Lutheran Church and Heritage Church have provided special containers in which the donated items can be placed. Call Merleen Smith directly at 982-2202 or stop in, say hello and leave your items at The Odessa Record’s office. All donations, no matter how large or small, are very much appreciated.

The Odessa Food Bank is located at Foursquare Church, 111 E. First Avenue (please use the alley entrance) and will be open Thursday, June 20, from 1:30-3 p.m. and again from 5 to 6 p.m.
