Lake Roosevelt recreation area reopens

Some services remain closed at reservoir

COULEE DAM – Fishing resumed in Washington and within Lake Roosevelt National Recreation Area on Tuesday in coordination with state officials.

The reservoir had been closed to fishing and boating by federal officials in cooperation with Gov. Jay Inslee’s quarantine on outdoor recreation.

That quarantine also included a ban on hiking on public lands, golfing and camping, which remains closed statewide.

But as of Tuesday, boat launches reopened on lakes statewide, including Lake Roosevelt. Docks at Seven Bays and Kettle Falls also reopened.

Officials said the water level remained low on the reservoir.

While the Spring Canyon boat launch and docks have reopened, they will close again from May 11-21 for paving.

Officials said that due to the continuing quarantine on other activities, services are limited at Lake Rooseverlt.

Fish cleaning stations will remain closed until further notice, officials said, encouraging fishermen to take their catch home to clean.

Lake Roosevelt officials said it’s against federal law to clean fish and leave the guts and heads on land, within 200 feet of boat docks, swimming areas and other developed areas.

“Leaving fish remains on the shoreline attracts wildlife, including bear and cougar, putting other visitors in danger,” a press release said.

Like the cleaning stations, campgrounds and toilets, and the Fort Spokane Visitor Center remain closed.

Water and trash services have also been shut down, officials said.

Lake Roosevelt officials said those recreating along the reservoir must remain at least six feet apart, and only recreate with family members living in the same home.
