ODESSA — The high school Class of 2020 voted last week during a digital meeting to delay graduation until July 18 in hopes of having a traditional commencement ceremony.

The majority vote came with the support of Superintendent Dan Read, Principal Jamie Nelson and senior class adviser Megan Walter.

Tentative graduation plans include a parade of graduates through town at 5;30 p.m., Wednesday, June 10, with social-distancing practices to be followed (i.e., spectators to remain in parked cars along First Avenue). The parade will begin at Seventh Street and extend to the Odessa Golf Course.

The formal graduation is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m., July 18, in the high school gymnasium. However, if social distancing restrictions are still in place at that time in Lincoln County, the location of graduation may be moved to the football field.

The ceremony will take place with the following conditions:

• Social-distancing practices adhered to as much as possible.

• Attendees limited to school students, staff and graduating seniors’ immediate family only.

• Masks will be made available to individuals — and strongly recommended and/or required for those older than 60 and with underlying health conditions.

• No food or beverages distributed before, during or after the ceremony.
